Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is about talking regularly with a trained professional in a safe space in a non-judgemental way. The aims vary with the individual but are generally about understanding problems and managing them better, reducing stress, improving relationships, gaining relief from symptoms, making changes which enhance quality of life and personal growth.
About Me and My Experience
I have worked in mental health services for 25 years. I initially trained as a doctor and through working in psychiatry developed an interest in psychological therapies. I trained first in London where I became qualified as a psychotherapist. I completed my training in Yorkshire. I have worked in some excellent specialist services, a service for people with HIV, a psychosexual clinic and a team for homeless adults in London and a trauma service and chronic fatigue service in Yorkshire. I have also worked in generic community services for adults. I qualified as a psychotherapist in 2000 and subsequently qualified as a supervisor for fellow therapists in 2005. I worked in the NHS until 2010 since when I have developed my independent psychotherapy service.
Qualifications
MBChB, Dip Psychotherapy, Association of Cognitive Analytic Therapy, accredited psychotherapist & supervisor.
UKCP registered psychotherapist
I work within UKCP & ACAT code of practice and ethics, have appropriate supervision and maintain my skills through a commitment to lifelong learning. My training and compliance with data protection legislation is up to date and I have a current ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) certificate.

How I Work
I initially have a chat with people on the phone or online to discuss what they are looking for and to answer any initial questions. I began seeing people online during the pandemic but have mainly returned to face to face work. I am happy to do either and in some circumstances (eg students) to combine the two. Sessions are in Leeds city centre or in Roundhay, north Leeds. There is parking outside the office in Roundhay and very close to the central office which is also 5 minutes walk from Leeds train station. I see people for an hour and generally for between 10-30 sessions.

Who I See
I see adults individually with a wide range of issues. I see people with both recent and long term difficulties. People come for help with emotional problems such as anxiety, depression or anger. I see people who are having difficulties in their relationships or work related problems. I see people who need help to recover from loss or trauma. I work with people who have eating problems, addiction and self harm. I work with people who would like to manage their lives or their health better including those with stress related symptoms. I see people who would like to improve their confidence or self esteem. I see people for whom therapy has been recommended by the court as part of care proceedings. I see therapists in training.
Sometimes difficulties are best worked on with partners. I work with couples who are struggling to communicate or struggling with a change of circumstances in their lives. Sometimes couples get stuck in patterns of avoidance or escalating conflict and a safe, non-judgemental space to explore and understand these patterns can help couples move forward.
